The Marriage Amendment is an amendment of our State Constitution that will define
marriage as the union between only a man and a woman. It will also prohibit other types
of legal unions that imitate marriage, such as Civil Unions or Domestic Partnerships, and
the legal recognition in North Carolina of same-sex marriages that are performed in other
states.
The Amendment reads:
Marriage between a man and a woman is the only domestic
legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this State.
By amending the Constitution, the definition of marriage will be determined by the people
of the State and will be out of reach from a court or legislature that would seek to redefine
marriage.
A constitutional amendment will settle permanently the definition of marriage in North
Carolina. It will place the traditional definition of marriage in the North Carolina
Constitution and beyond the reach of activist judges.
