The Healthy Youth Act, HB88, has been ratified by the General Assembly. The Bishops opposed the bill and their point of view was supported by more than 8,000 e-mails from Catholic Voice NC registrants. Although the bill passed, its final version allows parents to make choices about the sex education their children receive. Read the Ratified Version
School Violence Prevention
Despite the opposition of the bishops and the Catholic Voice NC Registrants who sent more than 26,000 e-mails to their elected representatives the General Assembly ratified the School Violence Prevention Act. The bishops are concerned that the inclusion of "differentiating characteristics" in the act will create a legal basis for same sex marriage in NC.
Bishops Jugis and Burbidge issued an ALERT on the Racial Justice Act which was discussed by the House Ways and Means committee June 3rd. The committee removed a provision of the bill that would have re-instituted the death penalty in North Carolina. The bishops objected to that provision. The bill still faces several legislative hurdles. We will keep CVNC registrants posted.
